Adding Comprehensive Coverage to Your Car Insurance Policy
Today’s car insurance policies are fairly customizable. While the state of Ohio requires all car owners to have a minimal level of protection, it’s likely in your best interest to add additional coverage. If you’re leasing a vehicle, you will almost certainly be required to include add-ons such as collision and comprehensive coverage.
As we talked about in our last post, collision coverage provides protection for your own vehicle when you’re involved in a collision, hence the name. Whereas a standard insurance policy covers damages to the other vehicle, physical injuries, property damage, and uninsured motorists, a collision policy pays for the repairs of your vehicle.
You will still need to pay your deductible, but after that, the repairs should be taken care of. If your car is totaled, you will typically be paid out for the current market value of your car. Ultimately, a collision policy can save you thousands, if not tens of thousands, should you cause serious damage to your vehicle.
Though collision coverage will increase the cost of your premium, it’s generally beneficial for anyone with a vehicle that’s worth at least a few thousand dollars or more. And if you’re going to have collision coverage, you’ll probably want comprehensive coverage as well.
What is Comprehensive Coverage?
Comprehensive insurance is similar to collision insurance in that it pays for repairs or replacement of your vehicle. The key difference is that comprehensive covers essentially any incident that isn’t a collision. This typically includes falling objects, hail, fire, vandalism, and theft.
Hitting a deer or another animal also falls under comprehensive coverage, which is a little confusing. If you swerve to miss an animal, and instead hit another car or an object such as a light poll, collision coverage comes back into play.
Because of nuances like these, it makes sense to always include comprehensive coverage with collision coverage. The good news is, comprehensive coverage is very affordable, as it’s less likely to be needed than collision coverage.
